Lukas Biewald and Chris Van Pelt, founders of Weights & Biases, had collaborated before. They rode the start-up train together at Figure Eight. Weights & Biases became a reality as Lukas contemplated their next project during his internship at OpenAI. While working with many of the best machine learning researchers in the world, Lukas discovered that the tools they used were outmoded and ineffective. Using tools that did not support his or his team’s ideas, he realized that his projects could never succeed. Building a new company is challenging, so to complete the group, Lukas and Chris asked Shawn Lewis, a close buddy with a founder's background, to help. Using their combined expertise, assets, and experiences, they created and are continuously enhancing tools that can satisfy machine learning practitioners' needs and drive forward the state of the art.
